The Salty Tart
Midtown Global Market is a must-visit food hall with a variety of choices from all over the world, from pho to Moroccan salads, huge Mexican tortas to the best macaroons I’ve ever eaten at The Salty Tart. These macaroons are worth traveling for; they’re better than my grandmother’s and that speaks for itself.
Open since 2008, Michelle Gayer’s Salty Tart bakery is the main attraction at the market, making everything from scratch everyday—from pastry cream-filled brioche to flaky layered croissants and buttercream-topped cupcakes to banana cream pies (they’re so good she’s confident enough to battle Bobby Flay, tune in for the show down on Food Network July 7). I’m not much of a baker, so I rely on Salty Tart’s incredible custom cakes for special occasions… I’ll admit, I spoil my son on his birthday every year with their to-die-for chocolate mousse cake.
Chef Gayer is a James Beard Award nominee many times over, including being a 2017 semifinalist for “Outstanding Baker,” and with her recent announcement of a new Salty Tart commercial kitchen, it’s a guarantee that we will be seeing a lot more of her delicious baked goods in the Twin Cities. I personally can’t wait to grab her goodies at the brand new outpost in the Minneapolis airport. Leaving the city with a few of her ambrosial coconut macaroons dipped in dark chocolate is a must.
