¡Salud! Tacos
The Zimmern List: San Diego premieres April 2 9|8c on Travel Channel!
To fully experience San Diego you need to spend a day in Barrio Logan, a neighborhood on the rise transformed by a vibrant art and food scene. After a stroll through the art-filled Chicano Park—home to a massive display of murals celebrating Mexican and Chicano culture—follow your nose, and the crowd, to ¡Salud!. A fixture of the neighborhood, this restaurant is always packed, so get in line and ask a local for recommendations on what to order if you’re on the fence. To start, I’d suggest the ceviche, made with fresh shrimp, onions, cilantro and avocado. Instead of a platter of stuffed peppers, their version of chile relleno is fried cheese wrapped in a roasted poblano pepper and housemade corn tortilla topped with a tangy slaw. Then there is the Barrio, a taco filled with braised carne guisado topped with beans and sour cream and wrapped in a hand pressed flour tortilla. But that’s not all—round out the meal with chips and guac, beer-battered catfish tacos, Mexican street corn, nachos, menudo, churros and a “hooch horchata.” I hope you’re hungry.
