Boston’s Best Tapas
Chef/owner Ken Oringer and chef Jamie Bissonnette, the duo behind the much-lauded Coppa, serve inspired Spanish fare at Toro, one of Boston’s most sought after tables. Located in the city’s historic South End neighborhood, the pint-size restaurant serves traditional and contemporary Barcelona-style tapas in a cozy, dimly-lit dining room with exposed brick walls. In typical tapas style, order several small plates to share. From the frias side, the atun crudo (incredibly fresh yellowfin tuna with a mild white soy sauce, spicy cucumber and pureed avocado) is light, refreshing and a must for seafood lovers, as is the plate of marinated oysters. Everything from the calientes menu is worth a try – the bone marrow is an ultimate, melt-in-your-mouth meat butter topped with oxtail marmalade; the cauliflower with golden raisins and pine nuts has an unexpected rich depth of flavor; the beef cheek with chilled farro is one of the most-ordered dishes for a reason; even the simple grilled corn is outstanding. If you have the time, put your order in for the spring rabbit paella with snails, asparagus and green garlic salsa. This popular spot doesn’t take reservations, so I’d suggest arriving early and grabbing a seat at the bar while you wait (order the pisco sour or a glass of wine off of the all-Spanish list). Toro NYC opened in the fall of 2013.
