Happy Garden

Cantonese Dim Sum

Dating back more than 120 years, Honolulu’s Chinatown is reportedly the oldest in the United States, and it’s teaming with fantastic Chinese snack shops, bakeries, markets and restaurants. This neighborhood is energized by new waves of immigration and enriched by the prolific bounty of the South Seas. For old-school Cantonese dim sum, head to Happy Garden. The small restaurant serves traditional dishes such as shrimp dumplings, bean curd skin stuffed with seafood, steamed pork bao buns and fried pork intestines. The intestines are my kind of porky snack – steamed for hours until they are melt-in-the-mouth tender, then deep fried for an ultra-crunchy outside. Not only does Happy Garden serve delicious food, it’s cheap (think $2 a plate), fresh (some of the best seafood in the world is caught and sold just down the street) and as authentic as it gets in this country.
