Night + Market Song
Los Angeles is the hottest food city on the planet. These days, it’s not just entertainers but also food entrepreneurs who are arriving in throngs to realize their dreams, creating a diverse restaurant scene where people are willing to take risks. Visiting the city and not eating Thai food is a crime—there are more Thai people living in LA than any other place in the world outside of Thailand. And for some of the best Thai food in the city, head to Night + Market Song in Silver Lake—a neighborhood that I like to think of as the Brooklyn of Los Angeles with a creative and welcoming vibe. In a small brightly painted restaurant on Sunset Boulevard, chef Kris Yenbamroong is cooking food inspired by his grandmother’s kitchen, as well as Thai bar snacks and popular street food. The menu is packed with bold, spicy flavors that have garnered a cult following in this town. Everything is worth a try, so hopefully you can gather up a few friends and feast family-style. A few suggestions to leave you drooling: perfectly grilled pork with basil, lemongrass, fish sauce, lime and chiles, aka the famed “startled pig”; a classic mortar-pounded papaya salad; crispy rice salad with soured pork; roast duck green curry; and khao soi curried noodles with braised hanger steak and tendon. Don’t forget the sticky rice.
