Classic San Fran Seafood
Located in the Nob Hill neighborhood, Swan Oyster Depot is more than 100 years old—an amazing feat in the restaurant business, especially considering they haven’t lost any relevancy. Get there early or expect to wait, folks start queuing up for one of the 18 counter seats before they open at 10:15am, and the line doesn’t relent until closing time, about 5:30pm. With its neon beer signs, sports memorabilia, hand-painted menu plastered on the wall (and my personal favorite, a giant shellacked marlin), Swan Oyster Depot is nothing fancy, but the freshness of ingredients here rival that of every high-end seafood place I’ve ever experienced. Start out with a selection of oysters, then move on to Dungeness crab, fresh octopus salad and absolutely stunning clam chowder. If you’ve never tried sea urchin, this is the place to do so. Creamy and unctuous, it’s one of the best foods on the planet, and they serve an insanely fresh version here.
