I got this email from Tamra C. McCraw yesterday. It’s reprinted in its exact form because I couldn’t put it any better… please read it, make the links your mission for today and lets help kids get the food they need during the summer months and beyond. I need you to call/email/tweet/urge your Senators to get active on this piece of legislation. Thanks, AZ
Andrew it would be incredible if you would leverage your social and email universes to help us put pressure on legislators to pass the Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill. Everything you need to tweet, call or email is in this email – but we’re here to answer any questions. Please help us make this happen – thank you!!!
Breaking news from Capitol Hill today: Sens. John Boozman (R, AR), Mitch McConnell (R, KY), Michael Bennet (D, CO), Sherrod Brown (D, OH) Joe Donnelly (D-IN) and Mark Kirk (R, IL) introduced the Hunger-Free Summer for Kids Act, a bill which could end hunger for millions of children during the summer months. Now we need everyone in our network to call, Tweet and email their Senators today, urging them to cosponsor this bipartisan legislation. Don’t hesitate to pass this along to your colleagues, friends and family – the more we put the pressure on the more likely we’ll connect kids to nutritious food in the summer time
This is a critical moment. This legislation is a momentous step forward in our work to end childhood hunger. With these improvements, as many as 6.5 million more children could have the opportunity to get the food they need during the summer months.
Share Our Strength has been leading the charge in advocating for critical changes to the summer meals program, which we believe are fundamental to ending childhood hunger in America faster and on a larger scale than ever before. Many of you have taken an active role in getting us to this point – from partners who joined us on Capitol Hill in April to corporate champions like Paul Brown of Arby’s, George McKerrow of Ted’s Montana Grill, Geoff Goodman of Orange Leaf and Ray Blanchette of Ignite Restaurant Group, who have connected us with key members of congress and publicly voiced support for legislative solutions to summer hunger. It is thanks to all of your hard work and support that we have this critical opportunity for our nation’s children.
It is urgent that we act now to build support in the Senate for this legislation; hungry children cannot afford to wait five more years until the next reauthorization to get a summer meal.
In a nutshell, the Hunger-Free Summer for Kids Act would give states more options to reach hungry kids, especially in hard-to-reach regions, like rural areas or communities currently ineligible to host summer sites. Proven options like meal delivery or a monthly grocery credit would allow states to reach more children effectively and efficiently with the food they need during the summer months. This bill does this while protecting and maintaining the work the No Kid Hungry campaign has done to increase the number of summer meal sites across the country. (Here is a look at specific policies within the bill.)
Success is close, but in order for this to become part of the law this September, it must have strong support in the Senate.
