The newest darling of Northeast Minneapolis’ brewery district, chef Jose Alarcon’s homage to his heritage is one part casual taqueria and one part upscale Mexican fare. Let’s be honest, it’s always great to have options. On the Centro side, satisfy your midweek happy hour needs with carnitas or barbacoa street tacos and a pitcher of margaritas, or come Sunday, devour their plate of chilaquiles with a tomatillo bloody maria. Enter through the front door and take a right, you’ll find Centro’s counterpart Popol Vuh, where the chef’s talent takes a more refined form. The 4-course tasting menu is a good place start—the current iteration includes cactus salad with lime vinaigrette, duck carnitas with poblano rajas con crema and escabeche, seasonal fish and grilled hanger steak with a pasilla chile sauce.
