Bizarre Foods Season Premiere Tuesday July 3, 9/8c on Travel Channel!

Bizarre Foods: Pony Express Premieres Tuesday July 3, 9/8c on Travel Channel!

We filmed in some truly amazing locations for this season of Bizarre Foods. There were moments in each episode where I just had to pinch myself—whether it was driving a real World War II tank in Belgium, trout fishing in Scotland with Angus McFadden or traversing the Sierra Nevadas on horseback following the storied Pony Express trail. This season offers up some of the best story telling I can remember, with incredible characters who honor their local food customs in unique and delicious ways. Being able to take viewers inside these worlds is what makes this collection of episodes so exciting for me.

A legendary chapter in our country’s history, the Pony Express was a mail service between Missouri and the new state of California, a bold example of American exceptionalism that still resonates 160 years later. Although short lived, it had a large impact on the United States, helping to bind our young nation. In this premiere episode, I’m riding the last 200 miles of the Pony Express Trail to its terminus in Sacramento, California. I’m eating my way through history with help from the region’s modern pioneers, from son-of-a-gun-stew and fire-roasted duck hearts to sturgeon skin chicharron and cowboy sushi. You don’t want to miss this, be sure to tune in June 3, 9/8c on Travel Channel.

Here are some highlights from the Pony Express Trail:

Fort Churchill Nevada … jackrabbits for dinner

Carol sat with her daughter and grandson and roasted those rabbits in a storm that dumped feet of snow over 2 days. She served them with roasted pine nut mush and wild dried berries. #paiute … every day I’m humbled by people all over the world. Food was out of sight btw…

Van Vleck covered wagon in background. Family came from Wisconsin and settled in Sacramento area. 160 year old commitment to agriculture. 5 generations. Amongst other things they raise wagyu/angus crosses and cut these zabuton steaks that have the grain of a flatiron and the size of a NY strip. They are essentially a Denver cut from the upper chuck but with the wagyu dna the stuff is insane. So good I started eating it raw. Trusty knife courtesy of @pennman88 … never dull.

Zabuton after grilling. Ideal for eating just past medium rare, well rested. Meltingly tender. @vanvleckranch wagyu/angus cross is beyond delicious. Some of the most beautiful beef I’ve ever tasted.

Beyond delicious. Watch the magic of sturgeon chicharonnes Doritos style with ground chiles and dehydrated aged cheddar from Chef Patrick Mulvaney at Sacramento’s Building & Loan

Fried chicken of your dreams at Sportsman’s Hall. Former pony express station serving great food for almost 170 years
