The Anchor Fish & Chips
Well before the influx of destination breweries and galleries re-energized Minneapolis’ artsy Northeast neighborhood, The Anchor Fish & Chips was battering Alaskan cod and frying hand cut chips for the locals. The narrow restaurant with tin ceilings and deep red walls lined with cozy booths has a real deal fish and chipper vibe with traditional Irish pub fare to match. The focused menu wouldn’t be out of place across the pond, with a dozen or so honest dishes such as shepherd’s pie, bangers, pasties, mushy peas, and of course, hand-battered fish and chips. The gang’s all there, all you need to do is bring a few pals and an appetite. And while it may seem strange to overlook Anchor’s namesake menu item, their Helicopter Burger should be a contender—the flavorful grass-fed beef patty topped with Irish cheddar, ham and a fried egg is one of the best burgers in the city.
If you’re headed to the annual Art-a-Whirl this weekend—the largest open studio tour in the country—be sure to stroll down 13th Avenue to fill up on fish, chips and pasties from the Anchor food truck while checking out their line up of local artists and musicians.
