Not Your Typical Vietnamese Restaurant

Chef Jordan Kahn opened Red Medicine in 2010, inspired by many post-shift late night meals at Vietnamese restaurants around Los Angeles. Although he uses fragrant, traditional ingredients in his wildly creative menu, this isn’t your traditional Vietnamese joint. Kahn’s reinterpretation of Southeast Asian cuisine is simply stunning, almost too pretty to eat (he’s been likened to the culinary version of Salvador Dalí and Jackson Pollock). On the dinner menu, you’ll find shareable small plates (chicken dumplings, Indian eggplant, Brussels sprouts in fish sauce), as well as larger plates (including the killer 36-hour braised beef brisket) and a 6-course tasting menu. Kahn has worked as a pastry chef at the country’s best restaurants, including the French Laundry and Alinea, so I’d suggest saving room for dessert – specifically the birch sap shaved ice with red currants, jasmine-flavored crème chiboust, crispy rice crackers, orange blossom bubbles and a roasted almond praline. It’s the most inspired dessert I’ve tasted in some time.
