Pizzeria Lola
Since it opened in 2010, Pizzeria Lola has always made it onto my top-ten list of favorite pizza joints, not only in the Twin Cities, but in the entire country. Chef Ann Kim is a perfectionist when it comes to her crust and an artist when it comes to toppings. The menu offers some traditional pies, like house-made fennel sausage or natural-casing pepperoni, and some not-so-traditional—think Korean-style beef short ribs with sesame and soy chili vinaigrette. My personal favorite? The Sunnyside: olive oil, guanciale, leeks caramelized in cured pork fat, topped with a hint of cream, a sprinkle of Pecorino Romano and two sunnyside up eggs. It’s phenomenal. For dessert, don’t skip the sweet-meets-savory vanilla soft serve drizzled with olive oil and sea salt.
Chef Kim is not a one trick pony, by any means. Armed with another successful shop, Hello Pizza, that serves big NY-style slices and simple salads that satisfy my whole team over the occasional working lunch, her most recent endeavor is Young Joni—a sleek restaurant and ‘secret’ back alley speakeasy serving up variations on her beloved, wood-fired pizzas plus globally-inspired small plates, like grilled Thai sausage skewers and charred Japanese sweet potato with bonito.
