Upper East Side Haven
My favorite place to escape the chaos of NYC has to be The Surrey. Originally built in 1926 as a residence hotel, this 190-room Upper East Side haven emerged from a 2009 top-to-bottom renovation boasting modern luxury, an award-winning dining program (headed up by James Beard Award-winning chef, Gavin Kaysen) and a cutting-edge art collection. Designed by interior architect Lauren Rottet, the lobby showcases a Chuck Close tapestry of Kate Moss, a mosaic “rug” and video art by William Kentridge. The sepia toned rooms and suites are spacious, featuring Duxiana beds, hand-painted wardrobes, fire places and deep soaking tubs. My wife loves the signature Cornelia massage at the second floor spa; I can’t get enough of the guests-only rooftop deck and garden for a stunning view and bites from the Michelin-starred Café Boulud. Venture down to the restaurant for the esteemed chef’s full menu, which is divided into four themes: la tradition (French cuisine), la saison (seasonal dishes), le potager (vegetarian) and le voyage (world cuisine). Or, feel free to stay in your pajamas and order Café Boulud room service, available 24/7. Fido can sit in the lap of luxury with the Surrey’s pet-friendly program that includes a box of treats from Bocce’s Bakery and a monogrammed dog bed.
