A Trip Back in Time
By Bob & Sue
Founded in 1898 in downtown Chicago by a German-born brewmaster, the iconic Berghoff restaurant still serves traditional food in an old world setting. Free corned beef sandwiches were originally offered as a way of selling beer. The restaurat has evolved under fourth generation family ownership into offering delicious wiener schnitzel, sauerbraten, sausages, homemade breads, and popular desserts such as apple strudel and German chocolate cake. The original all male bar was opened up to females only after Gloria Steinem led a protest. Historical tours are offered with sample food and beverage tastings, but great German cuisine is best experienced off the full menu.
