Tilia
Chef Steven Brown is one of Minneapolis’ greatest assets. At Tilia, he’s taken the concept of a comfortable neighborhood restaurant and perfected it—from the cozy atmosphere and kitchen counter seating, to the affordable, yet insanely delicious menu. It’s a place I can take my kid for breakfast, my wife for lunch and my lawyer for dinner. Start with one of the daily soups, from familiar favorites like the silky butternut squash puree to fresh spring pea soup with ahi tuna and coconut. The potted meat appetizer, spicy grilled shrimp with peas, and the fish torta with creamy peppadew slaw are mainstays that I can’t pass up, but really, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. I haven’t stopped dreaming about the parmesan agnolotti with asparagus and mushrooms I had on a recent visit. Brown is a very skilled pasta maker, so any of the seasonal rotating pastas are a sure bet. The beer list is thorough, the wine selection is thoughtful and the house made ginger beer? Spicy and delicious. Brown’s newest addition to the city’s dining scene, St. Genevieve, is an amazing French-style buvette that’s one of the best new restaurant opening in recent memory. He nailed the vibe and the familiar French fare.
