The Best Thing I Ate Last Week
In Nicosia, Cyprus, the world’s last remaining occupied and divided city, there is a small café called the Berlin 2 Wall. They serve a simple set meal with plenty of mezze—from snails to tahini, from tomato and feta salad to brined caper branches dressed with olive oil—but the centerpiece of the meal is their souvlaki and sheftalia. Their pork, skewered and grilled over carob wood charcoal is superb. Their sheftalia—small pork and lamb sausages seasoned with mint, parsley and onion, wrapped in caul fat then spit roasted—are my new favorite food on planet earth. Is there a better sausage out there in the world? Sure there is. But I’m a bright shiny object obsessed compulsive eater… so the best thing I ate last week beats everything, always does.
