The Gizmo Sandwich

By Andrew Zimmern

If you can’t get to the Iowa or Minnesota State Fair to get a real Gizmo, this is for sure the next best thing.

The Gizmo Sandwich

Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 pound loose Italian Sausage
  • 1 yellow onion, finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon chile flakes
  • 2 tablespoons of my Tuscan seasoning from Badia Spices
  • 1 cup of white wine
  • 3 cups tomato puree
  • 8 oversized hot dog or sliced hoagie buns
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • Optional sliced hot chile peppers, pickled or otherwise, minced onion, fresh basil… whatever suits your fancy for serving

Instructions

Preheat a large skillet with high sides over medium heat. Brown the beef and sausage, add the onions, chile flakes and my Tuscan seasoning.

Add the wine and bring to a boil, add the tomatoes and stir. Lower heat to maintain a simmer for 30-40 minutes until liquid is well evaporated. This is the key to a ‘neat’ sandwich.

Pull from heat and divide the meat into 8 buns. Place on a sheet tray, sprinkle with mozzarella, it helps if some goes over the sides of the bun, and broil to melt the cheese and get some browning. Wrap in foil or butcher paper for neatness’ sake and serve immediately.
