Zhug, Israeli Hot Sauce

If you love spicy food, zhug is a versatile condiment you should know how to make. A mixture of chiles, lemon, garlic and herbs, this bright, citrusy hot sauce packs a punch. I always keep a batch of this in the fridge to add to skewered chicken off of the grill, sandwiches, rice dishes, vegetables or this Israeli tomato and cucumber salad.

Zhug

Servings: makes 1 1/2 cups

Total: 5 minutes


Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup parsley leaves
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 serrano chile, seeds and stem discarded
  • 5 jalapenos, seeds and stem discarded
  • 1 small shallot, halved
  • Salt
  • 2 tablespoons kale flakes

Instructions

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth.
