My New Favorite Restaurant in Bangkok

Mind Blowing Thai Food at Soei

Catch Andrew Zimmern’s Driven by Food: Bangkok, Tuesday August 23 at 9|8c on Travel Channel.

Located along the railroad track in the Dusit neighborhood, Soei is my new favorite restaurant in Bangkok. Our meal at this casual, open-air restaurant simply blew me away. Nearly every single thing I ordered was the best version of that dish I’ve ever experienced. The scale, precision and techniques used here are unreal, due largely to the fact that every single dish passes through chef and owner P’soei Kurtcharoen’s hands. A former rugby player, legend has it that chef P’Soei started hosting epic post-game dinners for his teammates. Years later, a restaurant was born.

Soei Bangkok

Start out with an order of their signature kaem pla too tod, light and airy deep fried mackerel heads. Sounds weird, but it’s addictively snackable. Other stunners were the fried egg salad dressed with fish sauce, lime juice, garlic, onion, chile and cilantro; spicy tom yum soup with mackerel; the neau boo pad pongali, crab stewed in Thai yellow egg curry; and pla goong pao, a refreshing roasted freshwater shrimp salad bursting with lemongrass and basil. You’ll want to try the whole menu, so I’d suggest bringing a few friends who are willing to share.
