A Tough Reservation, But Totally Worth It.
After culinary school, French chef Gregory Marchand honed his skills in New York, Hong Kong and Spain. A few years ago, he returned to his homeland and opened Frenchie (a nickname he earned while staging at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen in London) in an out-of-the-way alley in the second arrondissement. Cozy, with stone walls, wood beams and exposed light bulbs, the dining room feels a bit like Restoration Hardware opened a very inviting restaurant. Marchand doesn’t give patrons a lot of options, which is perfectly fine when the food is this good. For 45 euros, you have your pick of one of two appetizers (think duck foie gras torchon with figs and walnuts), a main course (past options include Tamworth pig with sweetcorn, pickled cucumber and orange blossom, or bream with chard and carrots) and cheese or dessert. The selections reflect what’s in season and Marchand changes it up so frequently, no two meals will be the same. Can’t get a reservation at the restaurant? Try the Frenchie wine bar across the alley (no reservations taken, go early), or the more casual Frenchie To Go.
