The Best Thing I Ate Last Week? Dinner at Upland in New York City.
Justin Smillie’s Upland is as impressive a dining experience as New York offers. Here, serious food intersects with a rambunctious and spirited environment in a thoughtfully designed and beautifully lit space.

The five lettuce Caesar salad might be the best salad of any kind I’ve eaten in years. The beef tartare swaddled in crisped farro was a revelation in the art of seasoning and restraint.

The estrella with chicken livers, rosemary and sherry was brilliant. I’m still trying to figure out how the kitchen manages to cook ground liver without a gritty mouth feel. The burrata composition was creative and delicious floating in a city filled with boring cheese and tomato plates…
And the octopus? Beyond perfectly cooked, glazed in a brown butter vinaigrette… Don’t skip this restaurant next time you are in the Big Apple.
