Alden & Harlow
Located in the iconic and now-shuttered Casablanca space in Boston’s Harvard Square, Alden & Harlow is chef Michael Scelfo’s first solo venture after working at local favorites Russell House Tavern and North Street Grille. It’s a cozy, subterranean dining room with subway tiled walls and reclaimed wood, a casual yet stylish atmosphere that lends itself to any occasion. The menu is approachable—and affordable with most items under $20—populated with inspired versions of bold, flavorful dishes he makes for his family at home (and if this is truly the case, his family eats really well). Try the chicken-fried rabbit with celery, apple and blue cheese; pickled Verill Farm corn pancakes with scorched shishitos; the rich bone marrow croquetta complimented by grapefruit mostarda or the crispy pork belly with Anson Mills grits. Scelfo has also created what is arguably Boston’s best burger, with a custom short rib and brisket blend, secret sauce, bread-and-butter pickles and the perfect squishy bun. They only offer a limited quantity each night, so get there early.
