Street Food Perfection
Located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Cartagena is made up of a rich tapestry of African, Spanish, European and indigenous cultures and cuisines. The city’s old town neighborhood is a historical landmark with stunning plazas and awe inspiring 16th-century architecture. And while many eateries cater to the heavy flow of travelers, you can still find authentic Colombian flavors tucked between the tourist traps. For 28 years, La Mona’s arepa stand has provided old town residents with fresh fried comfort food. Her specialty is one of the city’s most iconic street foods: twice-fried arepas stuffed with soft-cooked eggs. The arepa de huevo consists of meat, cheese and a whole, uncooked egg sealed inside of a pocket of corn meal dough. The raw egg cooks in the arepa, then expands, encompassing the meat and cheese in a gooey fried egg perfection. The resulting texture is heavenly.
