The Zimmern List New Orleans: R&O Restaurant

Po’ Boys at R&O Restaurant

There is no city in the world like New Orleans. Its history, culture and cuisine truly make it a magical and captivating place. From muffuletta sandwiches at Central Grocery to oysters Rockefeller at Galatoire’s, even the most touristy restaurants are irresistible. On my last visit, I discovered a new favorite courtesy of my pal Donald Link, one of New Orleans’ best chefs and owner of the Link Restaurant Group, which includes the award-winning Pêche Seafood Grill, Herbsaint and Cochon, among others. He suggested we check out R&O Restaurant, located a stones throw from Lake Pontchartrain in Jefferson Parish. The casual Bucktown restaurant is a locals-only affair known for their po’ boys, specifically the R&O Special with chopped, meltingly tender roast beef, gravy, ham, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese and plenty of mayo on Italian sesame bread. Its rich, beefy flavor makes it the best po’ boy in the city—let the debate begin! A roster of down home Creole grandmother comfort foods, the rest of the menu is equally satisfying—mixed fried seafood plates, gumbo with crawfish, oysters, shrimp and crab, classic shrimp remoulade, crawfish pie, hush puppies… you get the idea. Next time you’re in the Big Easy, venture off of Bourbon Street for a true taste of New Orleans.
