Tattoo Artist Ben Hatfield

Ohio-based tattoo artist Ben Hatfield just may be Andrew's number one fan. While we've received plenty of emails, letters, drawings and photos from Bizarre Foods devotees, Hatfield's homage to AZ is inked permanently on his calf (the resemblence is uncanny). We asked Hatfield what inspired the Andrew tattoo, why he became a tattoo artist, and the best spots to grab a low key dinner in Columbus, Ohio.

AndrewZimmerncom:  What inspired you to become a tattoo artist?

Ben Hatfield: All throughout my childhood I have always loved drawing. All through my early years I had ambitions of being a comic book illustrator or graphic designer. I got my first tattoo when I was eighteen and something just clicked. I knew then tattooing was my true calling.

AZ.com:  Many people claim to be Andrew’s number one fan, but you’re the only one who has permanently inked AZ on your body (as far as we know anyhow). Why?

BH:  I love Andrew's philosophy of getting to experience other cultures through food. You can tell he has a true passion and love for what he does. There is a very genuine quality about him that really shines through. I know a lot of people watch the program just to see what "gross" thing Andrew will put in his mouth next, which IS entertaining, but my appreciation for what he does goes deeper. To me, Andrew is  more like a teacher of tolerance through culinary open-mindedness. Plus, he's just a ball to watch!

AZ.com:  Most bizarre thing you’ve tattooed on someone else’s body?

The most bizarre tattoo I've ever done would probably be on a client who brought in an old family quilt, and wanted the pattern from the heirloom tattooed all over her privates. It was definitely not a "typical day at the office".

AZ.com:  Favorite Bizarre Foods moment?

BH: A few come to mind right off the bat.... When Andrew was getting a massage, and the chair collapsed----PRICELESS!! The episode with the hundred-year-old raw fish also stands out. I'm definitely a huge fan of peanut butter and mayo on my burgers now, thanks to the show.

AZ.com:  Most bizarre thing you’ve even eaten?

BH:  I actually have a relatively weak stomach, but I'm very open-minded when it comes to food. I'll try almost anything once! I've eaten fried crickets and millworms, as well as squirrel, rabbitt, and pig's feet.

AZ.com:  You’re based out of Fate Tattoo in Columbus, Ohio. Whether it’s a cheap and delicious sandwich or a high-end steakhouse, what eateries are not to miss in your neighborhood?

BH:  One of my favorite things to do is eat, and Columbus has no shortage of great restaurants. From Thurman Cafe (greasy bar food), to the Rice Bowl (AMAZING Chinese cuisine), to the Blue Nile (Ethiopian fare). I try to stick mostly to family-run "hole-in-the-wall" establishmants.

AZ.com:  What’s in your fridge?

BH:  I don't have anything too awfully exciting in my fridge, usually. My girlfriend is an awesome cook, so there is usually just steak, chicken and lots of shrimp along with bottled water and soda.

Get inked by Ben at Fate Tattoo, an artist-owned shop, in Columbus, Ohio. And be sure to check out their Free Tattoo program on the Fate Tattoo blog. You probably wouldn't get a Richard Simmons tattoo if someone paid you a hundred grand, but it's still funny thinking about it.

:)

I love it!!! Only a die hard fan, or a stalker, would get this done.

i think you need to tattoo your autograph next to it!!!

Crazy

Heck. I don't even want to get my wifes name, let alone face tat'd on me. I couldn't imagine what would drive someone to get AZ on them. I suppose if I did get Andrews face tat'd on me it would have to be on my belly. That way people could rub my buddah and pat Andrews bald head at the same time. Tongue out

Seriously, the tattoo looks

Seriously, the tattoo looks just like you. And I think I might look into getting that Richard Simmons tatt. How bitchin' would that be??? I'd get it on left forearm to go with the Rip Taylor one on my right.
