The midnight ride of Paul Revere marked the beginning of a war that changed our world forever. On this episode of Bizarre Foods, I’m following in the footsteps of this great patriot, revealing layers of history and food traditions influenced by colonial settlers and the waves of immigrant cultures that followed. When it comes to iconic journeys, it doesn’t get more legendary than this. Starting on the cobbled stoned streets of Boston’s North End, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, I’m in search of old world Italian traditions that have defined the area for nearly a century. In Somerville, I discover meat heaven at an authentic Brazilian steak house, before heading to the kitchen of James Beard award-winning chef Tony Maws, where he’s cooking the forgotten foods of New England heritage. My adventure ends in the town of Concord, for an epic battle reenactment and a traditional colonial meal of pork and beans, cod chowder, ash cakes and quails roasted on bayonets. Along this 20 mile journey, you’ll find the patriotic spirit is alive and well.
