Where to Find the Best Caribbean Food in London

Caribbean Brilliance at Fish, Wings & Tings

London is fast becoming one of the best restaurant cities in the world, and it’s not just because of Harrod’s Food Hall or stalwarts like Fergus Henderson’s St. John (although I can’t go to London without eating at both), there is culinary brilliance happening in unexpected places. If you’re looking to get off the well-worn tourist circuit, spend an afternoon eating your way through Brixton, a neighborhood south of the city center with a large Caribbean population. It’s there that I had one of the better meals I’ve had in the city at Fish, Wings & Tings.

Opened by Trinidad native Brain Danclair only a few years ago, this small, colorful restaurant has quickly become a local favorite. On a drizzly London afternoon, an order of salt cod fritters with ginger-lime aioli was all I needed to put me in an island state of mind. The curried goat was cooked long and slow in a deep, flavorful gravy until it was tender enough to fall apart and served with a pineapple and mango chutney. If you’re on the fence about goat, this dish would make you a believer. Juicy and tender with a perfect balance of spice, the jerk chicken was some of the best I’ve had outside of the Caribbean. And to top it off, they make their very own spicy ginger beer.
