- 1/4 teaspoon Star Anise Bitters
- 1.5 ounces J Carver Rye (or Willett Rye)
- .5 ounce Maison Rouge Cognac
- 1 teaspoon demerara simple syrup (2:1 sugar:water)
- 5 dashes Peychaud's Bitters
Classic New Orleans Cocktail with a Twist
There’s plenty of folklore about this legendary cocktail, invented in New Orleans in the 19th century by Antoine Amédée Peychaud. And while the sazerac may not have actually been the first cocktail ever created, there’s a reason its popularity has stood the test of time. Originally made of bitters and brandy—and eventually with rye—the sazerac is a classic drink with a loyal following. This version might not be 100 percent historically accurate, but it’s a damn good variation.
SERVINGS: MAKES 1 SAZERAC
Add the star anise bitters to a lowball or coupe glass and set aside.
Stir remaining ingredients over ice and strain into the glass.
Squeeze a lemon twist over the drink and discard the spent peel.
